Vast Green Business Opportunity
The national lawn maintenance industry brings in between $11-22 billion dollars a year, depending on whom you ask. Before WWII, the market hardly existed. Now, just under a quarter of the nation's households employ a lawn maintenance company, leaving wide room for growth.
Unfortunately, the lawn care industry exacerbates significant environmental problems. During mowing season, 54 million people mow their lawn each week, using 800 million gallons of gasoline a year. According to the EPA, the small engines on lawn care tools like mowers and trimmers cause more than 5% of the nation’s air pollution; a traditional 3.5 horsepower mower in service for one hour can release as much pollution as a car driven 340 miles.
But there are alternatives, and awareness is building. Even after accounting for power plant emissions, replacing gas mowers with equally effective electric equipment results in a 99% reduction in carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, and methane and a 38% reduction in carbon dioxide.
