What should be on my fall lawn checklist before winter?
A fall checklist for Fort Collins-area lawns really has four jobs on it before the ground freezes: keep mowing until the grass stops growing, keep watering through September and October, handle leaves as they fall instead of letting them pile up, and get one more weed treatment in while weeds are still pulling energy into their roots. Notice what’s not on this list. Your sprinkler shut-down and winter watering come later. Those are winterizing steps, and they happen after this transition period, not during it.
We treat lawns for a living in Fort Collins, Windsor and Timnath, and Luke walks yards this time of year to figure out what each property still needs before winter.
Keep mowing until the grass tells you to stop
When to make the last cut is covered in our post on when to mow your lawn for the last time this fall.
Keep watering through September and October
The amounts are in our post on how much water your lawn needs in early fall.
Handle leaves as they fall, not all at once in November
Our post on whether to rake, mulch, or bag fallen leaves covers the options.
Get a fall weed treatment in before the ground freezes
Get one more weed treatment in while weeds are still pulling energy down into their roots. Our post on why fall is the best time to deal with dandelions explains the timing.compaction tends to creep back over time, so this is more of an ongoing habit than a single repair.
Fall is one of my favorite times to be out talking with clients, because you can see a whole season’s work paying off. Luke’s out walking yards making the real-time calls on what each one still needs, and between the two of us we try to keep families in Fort Collins, Windsor and Timnath from having to think about any of this themselves. If your yard could use a look before the ground freezes, we’re happy to come take one.
